If you’ve been one of our readers or twitter/FaceBook followers for the past 3 years you know that all of us admins have different causes we like to help. Some of the causes are listed on our sidebar under the “Charities we Support” link. You may also remember that in the past we’ve held auctions to support worthy causes such as Avon’s Speak Out Against Domestic Violence and Toys for Tots. This year we would like to do the same.
I’ll be honest and say that this cause was not one known to me until a year ago, through reading the works of a very talented fan fiction writer. What she wrote in her story and the facts she shared with everyone who read her story made me realize that this: sex slavery and human trafficking is a very real thing. So I want to take the time to thank @JMDarhower (who a lot of you know as kharrizmatic or @tatersgonatate) for opening my eyes and helping me find something worth fighting for.
Today, more than twelve million people worldwide are enslaved. An estimated two million children are bought and sold in the global commercial sex trade. The sex slavery industry has become an increasingly important revenue source for organized crime because each young girl can earn hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for her pimp.
While this is a problem in many countries, many Americans don’t realize that it happens here at home as well. Thousands of children are forced into domestic sex slavery each year and that the average age of entry is 13 years old. The majority of American victims of commercial sexual exploitation tend to be runaway youth who live on the street, often who have left homes where they were abused or abandoned. Pimps prey on their vulnerability. These girls are our neighbors, our friends, our sisters and our daughters.
I have heard human trafficking occurs abroad but how common is it in the United States?
Because human trafficking is an illegal practice, tracking actual numbers is difficult. However, it is a growing domestic problem with estimates of 14,500 to 17,500 foreign nationals, primarily women and children, trafficked into the US every year. Far more are trafficked within the US.
How many American children are trafficked in the U.S. every year?
Between 100,000 and 300,000 American children are at risk for commercial sexual exploitation at any time.
This is our way of helping out and we hope you join us in our efforts.
We at LetMeSign.com had the opportunity to attend the Breaking Dawn Part 1 premiere last year and met some of the cast and the creator of the series herself, Stephenie Meyer. During the days of tent activities and during the premiere I tried to get as many autographs on this book as I could, keeping in mind what I would do with it.
We are auctioning off this Autographed Breaking Dawn book at the Demi and Ashton Foundation’s eBay Giving works page
100% of the proceeds will go to the Demi and Ashton Foundation to help the efforts to stop child sex trafficking and slavery as well as making more people aware of this happening in our country.
